There are a number of ways to visualize a lamella. An electron microscope can examine single or multiple layers in a single crystal. A carbon support film can be used to examine lamellar objects directly.

However, if a thin film is used, the process can also be used to observe them from above. In addition to the carbon support film, a monolayer or a multilayer object will exhibit minimal movement when viewed directly.

Using electron microscopy to investigate single- and double-layer crystals has revealed that lamellae are arranged in a regular pattern. These structures are often bilayers or monolayers, with the latter introducing interlamellar connectivity and less detail.

As concentrations rise, however, more complex objects are formed, which make them difficult to examine using electron microscopy. Furthermore, the internal structure of a multilayer object may not be completely visible without severe collapse.
